A decisive year for European carbon - a market squeezed between speculator interest and political uncertainty
Date: 9 March 2021, Tuesday
Time: 15:00-16:00 CET

Speakers:

• Yann Andreassen, Senior Analyst EU Carbon
• Marcus Ferdinand, Head of EU Power & Carbon Analytics

The latest price moves in the European carbon markets (EU ETS) demonstrated how much uncertainty is currently present in the market. The benchmark EUA Dec-21 price reached €40/t for the first time in history on 11 February 2021. Much of the current market volatility is attributed to the lack of foresight, how exactly a higher ambition for Europe’s 2030 target would translate into the EU ETS and what role the market stability reserve (MSR), currently a major price driver, will play in such role. We explain our view on why the carbon market is currently in a high-price environment. To simulate the interplay between the 2030 target discussion and the MSR review, we run a multi-scenario analysis, simulating the impact on carbon prices and market balance.
